Search for Virginia as She Goes Missing
Once Virginia went with the ghost, her absence panicked the Otis family. It was noticed at tea time. The family began to search for her in and around the house but all the efforts proved useless. Mr Otis feared that the gypsies must be involved and went after them with his son Washington and two farm servants. But as the

gypsies had already left, he dispatched telegrams to all the police offices in the country. Later on he decided to ride up to Ascot and then to Buxley, a well known haunt of the gypsies. The Duke also followed Mr Otis and wished to join him in the search. Mr Otis was moved by the Duke’s love for Virginia. But all returned home at about eleven thirty at night with no news of Virginia.
The family was very sad but Mr Otis persuaded all to have their supper. Then he instructed all to go to bed with a promise that early in the morning he would ask some detectives from Scotland Yard to help them locate Virginia.
Virginia Returns
While they were moving out of the dining room, they were surprised to see Virginia coming down the stairs with a casket in her hand at the stroke of midnight. Everybody was relieved. Before they could ask her anything, she told them that she was with the ghost and how she helped him attain death at last. She said that though the ghost had been very wicked and nasty yet he was very repentant for his behaviour. All the members were further surprised when she showed them a box containing beautiful jewels that the ghost had given her before dying.
The Withered Almond Tree Blossoms
Virginia guided everyone to a low room with a vaulted ceiling There they saw something which really touched their hearts. They all saw a skeleton chained to a huge ring fixed in the wall. A plate and mug lay out of its reach which clearly indicated that the poor man had been starved to death. As Virginia was praying, standing by the skeleton’s side, the withered almond tree outside blossomed instantly. The face of Virginia lit up with a diving light. She was really glad that God had forgiven the ghost. The Duke was really very happy and thrilled with the goodness and nobility of Virginia He embraced her saying that she was an angel.
