SUMMARY
Virginia’s Chance Meeting with the Ghost One day, Mr Otis’s daughter Virginia had gone riding a pony with her lover, the Duke of Cheshire. Somehow she happened
to tear
her dress while crossing a hedge. On her return, she decided to enter the house taking the back staircase so that her torn dress might not be noticed. While she was walking along the corridor, she saw someone in one of the rooms. Out of curiosity, she went in. To her surprise, it was the Canterville ghost himself and he looked really sad.
Virginia Feels Pity for the Spook
A good girl at heart as she was, Virginia felt pity for the ghost although she also accused him of being wicked with her family. The ghost also expressed all his frustrations before the girl and called the Otis family as being rude, vulgar and dishonest.
The sweet natured Virginia was moved when the ghost told her how he had been starved to death by the brothers of his deceased wife whom he had murdered. The ghost told her that he had not slept a wink for the past three hundred years and that all his tears had dried As he had no Faith, the Angel of Death would never up. admit him to the Garden of Death, the only place where he could find peace and solace.
Virginia Resolves to Help the Ghost
Virginia, who was a pure soul full of love, was quite moved at the plight of the poor ghost. The ghost also told her that his deliverance was possible only if a pure soul wept for him and prayed to the Angel of Death to have mercy on him. But in doing so, might face the dark and fearful figures, evil forces and wicked voices who would try to scare her away but the purity of her soul would defeat all their efforts to harm her. He said that she could open the she Death’s house for him as she was herself an epitome of love and purity.
On hearing all this from the ghost, the kind and benevolent Virginia resolved to open the doors of Death for him.
When Virginia promised to help the ghost and pray for him, he rose from his seat, took her hand and kissed it thankfully. Then he led her across the room. Virginia saw the wall slowly fading away like a mist, and a bitter cold wind was around them. “Quick, quick, cried the ghost, “or it will be too late.” Then the wall closed behind them, and the chamber was empty.
